As reported by Variety, Nickelodeon is currently developing multiple SpongeBob SquarePants spin-offs, which will center around other characters in Bikini Bottom. President of Nickelodeon Brian Robbins told Variety:
“That’s our Marvel Universe,”
“You have this amazing show that’s run for almost twenty years.”
Brian Robbins later went on to detail what you could expect to see in these SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off shows. The Nickelodeon president said the network could:
“tell an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or maybe tell a Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story, or can Plankton have his own?” Robbins mused. “I think the fans are clamoring for it.”
Considering how popular the SpongeBob SquarePants brand is, it’s kind of surprising that Nickelodeon has taken this long to begin development on a spin-off series with other notable characters. After all, the original series began all the way back in 1999. The franchise has hit the big screen before though with The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) and its sequel, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015). Both of these movies excelled at the box office during their runs.
Last year, Paramount Animation announced that a new installment for the movie franchise was in the works. Titled, The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge, the film will most likely play off of the beloved classic It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s a Wonderful Sponge will hit theaters on May 22nd, 2020.
Information on when we can expect to see any of the spin-off shows is still unknown but you would have to guess that it would be sometime after The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge releases next year.
