Sport is a big part of many peoples lives, from sitting with the family on a Sunday to watch the football game, to getting dressed up for a day at the horse races. Each event in the calendar offers fans a unique cultural experience that sends the crowds crazy, but there are many sporting events that are known for their one of a kind atmosphere and that despite not being the most prestigious in the sport, keep the spectators coming back year after year to experience the thrill and buzz that it has to offer.
Horse Racing
When it comes to horse racing, Britain is not short of phenomenal events, with bookies offering guides to the Grand National or Royal Ascot free bets due to their worldwide popularity and prestige. Still, when it comes to atmosphere, there is nothing like the ‘Cheltenham Roar.’
The Cheltenham Festival is a beloved British racing festival in which stretches across four-days each March and is not only know for its beautiful display of horse racing excellence, but for its unbeaten atmosphere. The ‘Cheltenham Roar’ refers to the tremendous amount of noise made by the adoring fans as the flag rises to mar the first races and the beginning of the festival. The race itself is very popular with many horse racing enthusiasts as not only is the experience unforgettable, but many great talents compete in the races as the prize money attracts many as it is the seconds largest purse in England – £600,000 -, falling just being the Grand National – £1,000,000.
Soccer
Being the most popular sport in the world, it’s safe to say that it’s not short of beloved events, with each new year bringing a new season of unforgettable football. But, of course, when it comes to football, despite not being the greatest display of talent in the sport, the FIFA World Cup is, without a doubt, the most popular footballing events across the globe, and its atmosphere is second to none.
Every four years, almost everybody, whether a footy fan or not, will make their way to the stadium, local pub, or their very own front room to watch the World Cup unfold, to see which of the 32 countries battling it out will be the next to raise the trophy. The World Cup brings out the passion for football in even the most unlikely of spectators as it is more than just a football tournament; it unleashes a sense of patriotism. The record viewers for a single game during the competition is over 6 million, and that was in March 2010 in a game between the United States and Algeria.
Football
Football is played a little differently across the pond, but it’s safe to say that it hasn’t had an impact on its popularity. American football is enjoyed by fans all over the world but is primarily played in the USA and Canada, but the Super Bowl is an event that the world marks in their calendars.
The NFL Championship game stretches over an average of three hours and not only includes some of the greatest moments in football but also specialized adverts and amazing half time shows performed by some of the most famous faces in music. Just as in the World Cup, not just fans gather to watch the game, but it brings everyone together to enjoy the passion and enthusiasm for the final two teams.
