Square Enix and Luminous Productions have revealed a new IP, Project Athia, at the PlayStation 5 event today.
Project Athia (a working title) is an action-adventure game with an emphasis on storytelling. Not much is known in terms of the plot yet. In fact, details are minimal.
The trailer begins with images of some ruins while a woman walks through. Soon, we see glimpses of what will be Project Athia’s gameplay. We see the protagonist leaping from rock to rock in what looks to be an impressive and dynamic system of traversal. After that, we witness the protagonist slay some truly terrifying wolves by summoning roots from the ground. The trailer ends with stunning images of creatures and environments, including one of a dragon. That’s how you end a trailer.
However, Project Athia looks beautiful. The game was designed specifically for the PS5, harnessing the full power of the console. Despite its close relationship to the PS5, though, Project Athia is also being developed for the PC.
Project Athia is developer Luminous Production’s first game. The studio was founded in 2018 by Square Enix and focuses on developing games with their internally-developed Luminous Engine. The engine enables ray-tracing, deferred shading, and many other lighting-oriented improvements. It also features unique AI and cloud-based technologies.
Publisher Square Enix needs no introduction. They have a portfolio that is longer than a Final Fantasy game. Square Enix will be publishing Marvel’s Avengers on September 4, 2020.
The PlayStation 5 event was filled with game reveals and trailers. Horizon Zero Dawn 2: Forbidden West was announced as well as Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Hitman 3 was revealed, and a gameplay trailer of Deathloop was shown.
