Paramount+ has released the official trailer for Star Trek: Picard’s third and final season. The trailer sees Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) reunited with his crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation. This includes LeVar Burton’s Geordi LaForge, Michael Dorn’s Worf, Gates McFadden’s Beverly Crusher, Jonathan Frakes’ Will Riker, and Marina Sirtis’ Deanna Troi. While this is sure to be a treat for TNG fans, it’s also done purposefully to mark the end of an era. As Riker says to Picard, “You and I have traveled to the far reaches of space. But something’s different now. This is the end, my friend.” The trailer also teases some potential tension, as Picard is warned to “trust no one,” and he’s also asked if anyone he knows is still the person he knew. Picard’s final voyage is sure to be anything but simple.
‘Star Trek: Picard’ Final Season Trailer Teases the End of a Legacy
IndieWire says that this final season of Star Trek: Picard marks the end of an era. Patrick Stewart has made it clear that this is his final time portraying Jean-Luc Picard, a role the 82-year-old actor first took on in 1987 when Star Trek: The Next Generation premiered. Season showrunner Terry Matalas recently said, “It’s most fitting that the story of Jean-Luc Picard ends honoring the beginning, with his dearest and most loyal friends from the U.S.S. Enterprise. It would be an understatement to say that giving these characters a proper send-off is an honor. The entire Star Trek: Picard team and I can’t wait for fans to experience this final, high-stakes, starship-bound adventure in Season 3.”
While giving up this character, Stewart has said he will continue to act. He told Digital Spy in 2020 that he has no plans ever to retire.
The official plot for season three of Star Trek: Picard reads:
“In the epic, thrilling conclusion of Star Trek: Picard, a desperate message from a long-lost friend draws Starfleet legend Admiral Jean-Luc Picard into the most daring mission of his life, forcing him to recruit allies spanning generations old and new. This final adventure sets him on a collision course with the legacy of his past and explosive, new revelations that will alter the fate of the Federation forever.”
This trailer for Star Trek: Picard comes at a somber time, namely the day that season two star Annie Wersching succumbed to cancer at age 45.
The 10-episode final season of Star Trek: Picard will begin airing on Paramount+ on Thursday, February 16.
