Anthony Daniels has written a new memoir titled I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story. Daniels is, of course, well-known for his role as the iconic golden protocol droid in the Star Wars movies. Not only did he do the well-mannered voice, but he also wore the costume and provided movements with very limited visibility from his helmet. He has also lent his voiceover work for C-3PO on animated series including The Clone Wars and Rebels. In fact, in any series or video game where C-3PO has a line, Daniels provided the voice. This includes Robot Chicken, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Disney Infinity 3.0.Â
This isn’t Daniels’ first foray into writing with a Star Wars focus. He previously wrote the Wonder Column for Star Wars Insider. Daniels reminisces:
I wrote the column with Dan Madsen, who ran the official Star Wars fan club at the time, to tease my brain, I think. . . . Dressing up as C-3PO only goes so far, so I tried to show that I wasn’t just a man in a suit.”Â
This memoir is not considered an autobiography as it deals solely with Daniels’ work for the franchise.
Apart from one or two dives to the left and right, it is purely about my life in Star Wars, which has been 44 years. . . . I made a decision, and it was absolutely conscious, to only really talk about my life with Star Wars and the Star Wars spin-offs, which are legion, and things that are associated with [it] of which I’m a part, but if you use the word autobiography, no it’s not.”
When asked if he is surprised at the tremendous love fans have for the character of C-3PO, Daniels responded:
I was hosting Star Wars In Concert, so I was in a situation where night after night I was facing thousands of [fans] and lovers of John Williams’ glorious music. And because they were live shows, live theater, there was a real energy that came across the footlights at me. It was like a crash course in what I’d been missing all these years. Genuinely, I began to see through to the fan’s faces, so I’m a late learner.”Â
Anthony Daniels’ I Am C-3PO: The Inside Story is currently available for pre-order and will hit the shelves in-store and online on November 5th.
