For most Star Wars fans out there, it was assumed that the Stormtrooper commander, Captain Phasma, didn’t survive the destruction of the Starkiller base in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The unfortunate fate of Phasma could be assumed because of the role she played (or barely played) in the seventh installment of the franchise. She had only a few lines, appearing just enough to adore the badass armor she donned. But, now, a new 4-issue comic book series coming out in Septemeber will detail how this unlikely villain survived the Resistance’s attack.
Gwendoline Christie, an actress known primarily for her role as Brienne of Tarth in the show Game of Thrones, is set to return in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. So it’ll be cool to see how she survived the chaos surrounding the Starkiller base in the previous movie, even if its occurring off-screen. It has been reported that, after surviving, Captain Phasma meets back up with forces of the First Order. Maybe the comic series will shed some light on how the First Order plans on striking back, and how the Stormtrooper commander fits into that plan.
Considering Gwendoline Christie is a well-known actress, I had a feeling that she would be coming back for the next film. The Force Awakens set up a whole smorgasbord of characters (like General Hux, Supreme Leader Snoke, and Poe Dameron) who appeared in only a few scenes throughout the whole movie. Poe being a minor exception. Yet, they are played by well-known actors whom I’m sure Disney doesn’t plan on getting rid of anytime soon. As we have learned from past Star Wars’ films, the introduction of minor characters in one chapter of the story can make way for the potential of them being more important as the story progresses.
