The Stranger Things universe is expanding with a stage play in London at West End’s Phoenix Theatre later this year. The prequel, The First Shadow, has a story from the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, writer and executive producer Kate Trefry, and Jack Thorne. Trefry wrote the play. Tony-winner Stephen Daldry will direct with co-director Justin Martin.
The story will expand upon a plot from the fourth season of the Netflix series. It will see Hawkins in 1959 and follow the Creel family. Sinister supernatural forces haunted the family, leading to the deaths of most of the family. Victor Creel (Kevin L. Johnson/Robert Englund) caught the blame and was put into a mental institution. Surviving son Henry Creel (Raphael Luce/Jamie Campbell Bower), was put into the same lab that Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) was in due to his powers. He is seemingly killed by Eleven but is actually put into the Upside Down, turning into the villainous Vecna.

Spinoff plans have been known for some time for Netflix’s flagship series. The Duffer Brothers have been hard at work on the fifth and final season, along with new ways to expand upon the world. A part of that plan was taking it to the theater but it was previously untitled with no information on its story. An anime spinoff is also in the works.
The previous season of the show set up its endgame. As spores from the Upside Down rain on Hawkins, it looks like everyone will need to be informed about what has been the cause of all the weird happenings in the small town. Between Vecna and the mysterious Mind Flayer, the cast has quite the match to overcome in this final outing.
Tickets for the Stranger Things stage play will be up for sale this spring.
