Video game adaptions are back after films like Uncharted and both Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Now, Nintendo has delivered the first trailer for the Super Mario Bros movie, which features a first listen at Chris Pratt voicing the titular plumber. We also hear Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Jack Black as Bowser.
The Super Mario Bros trailer shows an intimidating look at Black’s Bowser as he faces the Snow Kingdom’s penguins. We also hear Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike the Magikoopa assisting Bowser in this invasion. After he mows them down with his army of koopas, we switch over to our hero. Chris Pratt has a few lines as Mario while he is guided to his adventure by Key as Toad.
Since the casting was announced, fans have been divided on the voices of these iconic video game characters. The rest of the cast, who we did not hear or see in this first trailer of the Super Mario Bros movie, include Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. The original voice of the character from the games, Charles Martinet, will feature in the film with a cameo.
Super Mario Bros movie trailer gives first taste of Chris Pratt as the character
As fans were already divided on the casting, conversations have grown on social media. People have talked about the voices they heard in the Super Mario Bros trailer, the lack of a butt on the titled character, the beautiful animation, and debates on whether or not it will be good, as video game movies have historically been poorly received.
The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who have worked together on Teen Titans Go! It was written by Matthew Fogel (Minions: The Rise of Gru).
The trailer was released just over a year after the announcement last year in September. It aimed for a December 2022 release but has since been pushed to hit theaters on April 27, 2023.
