Super Smash Bros. Could Be Adding Pokémon Kubfu Soon

There is no doubt that 2018’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the premiere Smash Bros. game. Its character selection is full of both classic and new faces, and the game offers the premiere Nintendo Switch fighting experience. One of the biggest selling points of Ultimate is the utilization of its Fighter Packs and DLC. With ARMS’ Min Min being announced as the first member of Fighter Pass vol. 2, the speculation for the proceeding members is at a fever pitch. The current rumor has given the nod to Pokémon’s newest legendary, Kubfu.

Why Kubfu? Pokémon is the Obvious Pick

To clarify, Kubfu’s evolution, Urshifu, is also a heavy favorite. The current speculation is only natural. Nintendo’s Smash Bros. series has become a second home for video game characters from across the industry. Even so, the franchise has always given special attention to Nintendo properties.

Pokémon has been a major player in the Super Smash Bros. franchise since the beginning when Pikachu and Jigglypuff appeared in Super Smash Bros (1999). Considering that no Pokémon from Sword & Shield has joined the Super Smash Bros. roster yet, it feels right that the star of Pokémon’s first-ever DLC is the initial addition. Moreover, given Kubfu and Urshifu’s Fighting-typing, the duo feels like a perfect match for Smash Bros.

Money Talks

Apart from simply ‘feeling right’, adding a Gen 8 Pokémon to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate makes sense financially. As reported by Dot Esports in early May, Pokémon Sword & Shield have sold well over 17 million copies. With sales figures like that in less than a year, it would be criminal for Nintendo to not include fighters from Pokémon Sword & Shield. If Kubfu or Urshifu aren’t selected, Cinderace or Toxtricity would also be a fantastic choices. Cinderace, being a starter-Pokémon, is particularly quite reminiscent of the fan-favorite Greninja.

Of course, if Nintendo solely uses financials to determine the remaining Fighter Pass vol. 2 characters, we may end up seeing Tom Nook and other Animal Crossing islanders. We wouldn’t hate that either.
