Superman: Red Son is about to hit home. The fan-favorite storyline will be available on digital platforms and 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack and Blu-ray combo.
Superman: Red Son is based on the 2003 comic of the same name. The story asks, “what if Superman didn’t land near a farm in Kansas, but rather, Stalinist Russia.” Superman is fighting for the Cold War-era Russia doesn’t bode well for the world.
DC Comics first published the Red Son mini-series in 2003. Mark Miller created the comic as a twist on the classic story. Superman raised under Soviet Russia would be a completely different Man of Steel. The comic was met with critical and commercial success and was also nominated for an Eisner Award in 2004.
What makes the story so intriguing is we also get alternate versions of popular DC characters as well as real political figures. There’s an alternate-reality version of Stalin and JFK. In this version of events, Superman fights for Stalin and all that the dictator stands for. Superman’s real name is even a closely guarded state secret.
Warner Bros. Animation and DC have had a very successful run with their animated features as of late. The DC Universe may be struggling on the big screen, but the home video front is thriving. The three most recent entries are a delight to watch. Starting with Superman: Doomsday and culminating with the latest Wonder Woman: Bloodlines, fans have eagerly awaited the release of each feature film.
Superman: Red Son, along with the DC Showcase animated short, Phantom Stranger lands on digital platforms starting February 25, 2020. The 4k Ultra HD and Blu-ray Combo Pack are available soon after that on March 17th, 2020.
