Red Dead Redemption 2 most likely won’t have single-player DLC, at least there is nothing planned right now. That’s because Rockstar’s focus is all on Red Dead Online. It’s not a secret that Grand Theft Auto V‘s online component, Grand Theft Auto Online, brings a lot of profits to Rockstar. And the studio is planning to support Red Dead Online in the same way, in the upcoming months and years.
In an interview with VG247, the developers confirmed a massive effort to be directed towards Red Dead Redemption 2‘s online component. The goal is to make the multiplayer experience feel as, if not even more, complete than the single-player one. In the same way, as it happens in Grand Theft Auto Online.
One of the many new elements that Rockstar wants to introduce, for example, are properties.
“We want to introduce properties at some point in the future,”
Red Dead Redemption 2 lead open-world designer, Scott Butchard said.
“Again, part of the reason is we don’t want to jump the shark too soon. We want players to live like an outlaw, live in the Wild West…We want the camp to be something that you take care of, and we want the expansions to update it, and you get your own distinct feel. It’s your own camp, this is my camp, it’s their camp. We don’t want to leave that behind too quickly.”
Red Dead Online‘ s content planning and Rockstar’s ambition for the game
About how Rockstar is planning the multiplayer content, the lead online production associate, Katie Pica said:
“When planning future roles and other content, we think about the world in key areas: exploration, capitalism, wildlife and nature, pastimes, and bounty hunting style activities, which are an offshoot of the law, depending on how honorable you play. We love the idea that at some point a highly ranked bounty hunter could become a lawman. So far the roles have touched on a few of those ideas, but there’s a lot more to do.”
To confirm that right now the effort is all dedicated toward Red Dead Online, online producer Tarek Hamad added:
“We’ve said it before, but we all love single-player games, and Red Dead Redemption 2’s absolutely massive story and equally massive epilogue are hopefully evidence of that. The team’s ambitions for Red Dead Redemption 2 were sky high in every way, and when we are building worlds of that scale, the single-player experience almost always leads the way. Our ambitions for our online games are just as high, and with Red Dead Online we are continuing to build and expand to match the world we created for Red Dead Redemption 2’s story.”
Therefore, the players that were eager to receive a new single-player expansion will most likely be disappointed. However, Red Dead Online‘ s future is very exciting. And because of that, a single-player expansion may not be missed so much, after all.
