Sweet Magnolias has been renewed for a second season on Netflix following the successful run of its first season.
Based on Sherryl Woods’ popular book series of the same name, season one of the feel-good romantic drama premiered in May 2020, earning mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, spending several weeks on the streaming service’s coveted Top 10 list.
Telling the story of three lifelong best friends— a chef, a lawyer and a recent divorcée — Sweet Magnolias takes us their journey through relationships, family, and careers in the charming (fictional) small town of Serenity, SC.
The 10-episode first season on Netflix unfolded as the trio – Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) -decide fulfill their childhood dream of opening a spa in their small South Carolina town, culminating in thrilling twist in the finale.
All three leads are set to return for the upcoming season of Sweet Magnolias which is executive produced by Woods and Sheryl J. Anderson (Ties That Bind), who also serves as showrunner, with Daniel L. Paulson Productions is producing.
The show also stars Grey’s Anatomy actor Justin Bruening as Maddie’s baseball-coaching boyfriend Cal Maddox, The Flash’s Chris Klein as Maddie’s ex-husband Bill Townsend, Logan Allen as Maddie’s younger son Kyle Townsend, and Zoey 101’s Jamie Lynn Spears as Bill’s pregnant fiancée Noreen Fitzgibbons, among others.
Sweet Magnolias is one of two Netflix projects currently underway as part of the streaming service’s efforts to push more female-led shows in their romance drama space, the other being Virgin River another show -which debuted in December 2019- based on a bestselling novel with the second season slated to drop later this year.
The series joins a list of Netflix renewals announced recently, including Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever, Gentefied, After Life, Kenya Barris #BlackAF as well as the sixth and final season of Lucifer.
