Ta-Nehisi Coates, a superstar author, is apparently writing the next Superman story for a J.J. Abrams-produced Supermen film helmed by Warner Bros. J.J. Abrams had the following to say in an S&A statement:
To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” said Coates in a statement to Shadow and Act, a website dedicated to the African diaspora in the arts. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America’s most iconic mythic hero.
“There is a new, powerful, and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity,”
Coates’ Superman
According to this Hollywood Reporter article, “sources” are indicating it’s going to be a Black Superman story. The article goes on to explain that this type of project is something “the studio has been trying to wrap their heads around for months on end, maybe even years.”
Coates, however, is already an established author, a superstar writer with experience not only in professional writing but with fantasy writing as well with both Black Panther and Captain America series under his belt. It would be an understatement to say that this is a compelling resume. It is highly unlikely that Coates is unprepared for this undertaking, no matter how daunting it may seem.
Abrams is, on the other side of things, currently juggling several DC titles as part of his expanded deal with WarnerMedia. This feature is the first in line to be brought to life by the looks of it.
