Lucasfilm has plenty of Star Wars projects in the works. One of those is the Star Wars movie by Taika Waititi. In an interview with Total Film, the Thor: Ragnarok director said he is aiming to do something different when he goes to the stars to helm one of the biggest franchises in the world.
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand,” he said. “I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”
A Star Wars movie not connected to the original trilogy may seem like a no-brainer, but every film and show has related to the original trilogy in some way. The Taika Waititi movie could be refreshing for fans, especially knowing his style of bringing comedy and heart to his projects like Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit.Â
When to Expect Taika Waititi Helming a ‘Star Wars’ Movie and More
In a separate interview with Total Film, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy said that the studio aims for a 2023 release for the Taika Waititi Star Wars movie. No plot details are known.
In the meantime, the New Zealand filmmaker is releasing his second Marvel film, Thor: Love and Thunder. It will star Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and most of the Guardians of the Galaxy except for Zoe Saldana. It will introduce Zeus to the MCU, played by Russell Crowe. The antagonist will be Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale. The film will release in theaters on July 8th.
