Taron Egerton has revealed that he is in talks with Marvel executives to take the role of Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Kingsman and Rocketman star has been among the many speculated actors to play the role, but a report from Deadline confirms that the actor has officially met with Kevin Feige and other Marvel executives with the hopes of taking on the role famously played by Hugh Jackman. Egerton told The New York Times, “I’d be excited, but I’d be apprehensive as well because Hugh is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it. “But hopefully, if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”
Can Taron Egerton Fill Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine Boots?
To say that Egerton has big shoes to fill would be an understatement. In a century with three different Spider-Men, three Batmen, and more versions of Superman seeming to be on the way, Hugh Jackman stayed constant in portraying Wolverine from 2000’s X-Men to 2016’s Logan. When so many young people have grown up with Jackman as their Wolverine, seeing anyone else in the role would be strange. However, Jackman has made clear that he will never return to the role, and it is certain that someone else will have to take the claws on eventually.
So should Egerton be that actor? One thing is certain: Egerton is an actor with range. He became a star when he went from a troubled street kid to a James Bond-style spy in the Kingsman franchise, and he won a Golden Globe for portraying Elton John in the biopic Rocketman. Perhaps he could show even more range as the rough and tough loner mutant. However, no casting choices have been announced, so time will tell if Egerton or someone else will be the next Wolverine.
