Tekken 8 had only gotten a relatively small teaser not too long ago, but as expected, the next big fighter from Bandai Namco came to The Game Awards in full force. Tekken 8 got a new gameplay trailer that shows off multiple returning characters and hints at the new fighting mechanics.
The new gameplay trailer for Tekken 8 shows short snippets of Jin, Kazuya, Lars, Law, and Paul, among others. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and it shows. The stages in the trailer are really something to behold, and the characters look great with their new designs and improved animations.
While we still haven’t gotten a release date for the game, Tekken 8 will likely release sometime after June 2023, maybe even 2024. The main reason is the recently confirmed release date of Street Fighter 6 in June 2023, and Bandai Namco would not want to compete with that, understandably so.
Tekken 8 New Gameplay Trailer At The Game Awards
The game’s new fighting mechanic seems to be something called “Heat” and it has the ability to extend or improve other moves, making the already mind-numbingly long Tekken combos even longer. One snippet in the trailer shows off this system in action and is quite reminiscent of Street Fighter 4‘s FADC mechanic. But we’ll have to wait and see what makes it different once we get more footage.
The storyline in Tekken 8 will bring back the focus on the family issues between the Mishima family, something fans have missed since Jin was sidelined in Tekken 6. The new story mode is being referred to as “Fist Meets Fate” and promises a compelling narrative.
Tekken 8 will come to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC on Steam. It seems that Capcom and Bandai Namco have opted for very different strategies, as Street Fighter 6 is not a current-gen exclusive because it will also come out on PlayStation 4, among current-gen consoles and PC.
