Thanos winning in Avengers: Infinity War was depressing enough. However, the film’s VFX supervisors have revealed a darker alternate ending that was eventually scrapped.
The VFX team in question, Digital Domain, had originally envisioned Thanos walking through a river of blood where he encounters the young Gamora. Disturbingly, the river of blood represents his victims. VFX Supervisor Dan DLeeuw admitted it “got a bit dark” and although scrapped, footage has been left over.
You can see the prototype scene unfold at the 3.40 mark of this video:
Instead of running with the blood-river idea, Digital Domain eventually decided to expand the Soul Stone idea. As for what Soul World will look like, fans will have to wait for Avengers 4 in 2019.
Avengers: Infinity War was both a critical and commercial hit upon release, earning $2.046 worldwide at the box office. It has an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics praising the epic story told with a wide array of characters. This isn’t even mentioning Josh Brolin’s standout performance as the movie’s chief breakout villain, Thanos.
Sequel problems
The sequel to Infinity War is currently untitled. It was originally going to be named Infinity War – Part 2 before it was removed in 2016. Regardless, it will still serve as a continuation of the plotline. Fans from all over the web are concocting their own theories about the story’s conclusion in anticipation. The film in question is due for release in May 2019, finishing off Phase Three of the MCU.
Given the heavy body count of IW, Germain Lossier of io9 wondered whether the dead characters would appear in marketing for the sequel. The question was raised whether having them featured in promotion would stir curiosity and intrigue as to how they would return. However, Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, said that these characters wouldn’t feature in promotional material. Given his popularity, we can certainly bet on Thanos being part of that.
