The Amazing World of Gumball is set to return with The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie! and a new TV series. According to a report from Deadline, both projects have received a green light from HBO Max and Cartoon Network. This will be the first time fans have seen Gumball and friends since the original Cartoon Network series ended in 2019. Returning to direct and executive produce The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie! is Ben Bocquelet, the creator of the original series. Joining Bocquelet is Shane Mack, who wrote the script for the feature-length movie. Along with them are Sam Register, Vanessa Brookman, and Sarah Fell, who will serve as executive producers.
While not many details about the film are known, it reportedly serves as a bridge between the original series and the new TV series. The plot of The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie! revolves around Gumball’s biggest fan finding a lost episode from the original series. Somehow, it accidentally opens a portal, sending the fan into Gumball’s amazing, cartoon world. Once there, the super fan must help Gumball and his friends, Darwin, Anais, Richard, and Nicole stop an evil force that is taking over Elmore.
The original TV series received a number of awards, including an International Emmy, nearly ten BAFTA Children’s Awards, three Annie Awards, and six British Animation Awards. Amy Friedman, who serves as the Head of Kids and Family Programming for Warner Bros. explained this acclaim in a statement, saying, “Gumball is one of those rare characters who effortlessly seems to tell us the truth, make us laugh and unify people.”
