Sadly, fans of The Boondocks will have to wait even longer before seeing Huey, Riley, and Granddad Freeman return to their screens. According to a report from Deadline, The Boondocks reboot for HBO Max is no longer moving forward. Back in 2019, HBO Max ordered 24 episodes — spread across two seasons — of The Boondocks reboot from the series creator, Aaron McGruder, and Sony Pictures Animation. The reboot was initially set to premiere on the streamer in the Fall of 2020 with a special, 50-minute episode. According to Deadline‘s sources, Sony Pictures Animation is currently evaluating other options for The Boondocks reboot.
The reboot of The Boondocks on HBO Max was set to follow the adventures of Robert “Granddad” Freeman and his grandsons, Huey and Riley Freeman. In the new series, the family has moved to a new community in suburban Maryland. However, the trio quickly discovers that the community has been taken over by Uncle Ruckus, a tyrant who commands a neo-fascist group. Ruckus and his regime make life for the Freemans an everyday struggle.
The original Boondocks series was based on a comic strip by Aaron McGruder, the show’s creator. However, it eventually evolved into an animated series that aired on Adult Swim from 2005 to 2014. The series did well during its run on Adult Swim, gaining devoted fans and earning McGruder a Peabody Award.
Earlier this week on the Geekset Podcast, Cedric Yarbrough, a voice actor for the original Boondocks series, confirmed that the reboot was in trouble, stating:
I hate to say this…right now the show is not coming back. We’ve been wanting to do the show and Sony and its…they decided they’re going to pull the plug. Hopefully one day we’ll be able to revisit it…I wish the show was coming back.
