Gamescom’s Opening Night Live opened with the reveal trailer for Borderlands 4. Developed by Gearbox Software, the trailer – which you can watch below – was accompanied by a 2025 release date. It shows Elpis transported by the Firehawk’s symbol, pointing to Lilith’s fate at the end of Borderlands 3. The planet crashes into something like a rift causing some destruction. In the wreckage, a robotic hand grabs a burning Psycho’s mask. While that is not much to go on, the reveal trailer does leave us to speculate where the new title could take the Borderlands franchise.
The last mainline title in the franchise was 2019’s Borderlands 3, although it has been supported with new content. Of course, the latest addition to the Borderlands franchise was the movie which was released a couple of weeks ago. You can read our review here, but needless to say, it did as well critically as it did with audiences. As of writing the film has only managed to earn $18 million at the worldwide box office, against a budget of $120 million. Hopefully, fans of the game franchise won’t hold the movie against the new title.
Based on the reveal trailer, we don’t know what new worlds or heroes Borderlands 4 will introduce. But, if it’s anything like the previous titles there will probably be another Vault, and you will undoubtedly play one of the Vault Hunters tasked with the legendary quest of finding it. Who knows, there might even be references to the disastrous movie or a special Cate Blanchett (Thor: Ragnarok) outfit for one of the characters. We will undoubtedly know more about Borderlands 4 in 2025, so keep your eyes and ears open for new information.
Borderlands 4 is slated for a 2025 release on PlayStation 5,
