You trudge through the snow, decisions racing through your mind. Follow the footprints or make a campfire? Spend time crafting or run towards the gunshots? Set traps and hide or attack guns blazing? These are the questions that players are already asking themselves in the newly released PVP survival game The Darwin Project from Canadian indie studio Scavengers. The project had been in early access since March 2018, and not only is it out now, but it is totally free-to-play!
Here’s the setup; The world is getting colder as the onset of an apocalyptic winter creates an opportunity for a fatal game show to rise to popularity. Players will hunt or hide in the snowy arena Hunger Games-style using combat and trickery alike to outlast their competition. But there’s a twist! One player per round will be designated as the all-seeing “show director,” and get the chance to control powerful arena altering effects and powers. Real spectators on Twitch make up the in-game audience, and will also be able to bet on the contestants and vote on match elements. With real players controlling all aspects of the game show, The Darwin Project is set to be a more immersive gaming experience than most traditional survival or battle royale games.
Early Access player count between Steam and Xbox Game Preview reached 3.6 Million players, so with an active player base, you’re sure to find a match. The game has gone through many updates, and you can find info on the game’s website about its progression from early access to where it is today, as well as info on patches, the current version, and any upcoming changes/additions in the future. There is even a short game guide that helps to initiate new players.
The full release version of the game also includes some new content:
- 3 class specializations in the form of unique gear options. Choose either Jet Wings, a Grapple Gauntlet, or a drone called “the headhunter.” Choosing from these 3 new options will allow players an advantage in certain environmental and tactical situations
- New cosmetics available
- All items can now be purchased from the dressing room
With a player as show director pulling the strings combined with real spectator interactions, The Darwin Project is set to be a truly unique experience. The Darwin Project is out now and free to play on Steam, Xbox One, and PS4.
