After several delays, DC’s upcoming The Flash has finally begun gaining exciting traction as of late. Michael Keaton joined the project in June, returning to the role of Bruce Wayne after nearly three decades. On Thursday, we got word that Ben Affleck was also returning to the DCEU. Now, during a digital panel for DC FanDome, star Ezra Miller revealed concept art for his new costume. One piece of artwork shows The Flash with lightning behind him while another shows him teaming up with Batman.
“It’s more organic, you can see light embedded in it,” said director Andy Muschietti (2017’s IT and the 2019 sequel). It looks closer to the classic costume than what was seen in 2017’s Justice League. Bruce Wayne himself, presumably Michael Keaton’s version as he is in the above concept art, designed the new suit for The Flash.
The panel also discussed how The Flash will delve into the multiverse. It had long been known that DC was looking to the comic storyline Flashpoint for its inspiration. The film has gone through several directors and screenwriters. But the idea of jumpstarting a cinematic multiverse has seemingly never been abandoned. Hence why Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will both appear in the film as different versions of Bruce Wayne. And how Robert Pattinson will portray the character in Matt Reeves’ stand-alone film. Scriptwriter Christina Hodson (Birds of Prey) reiterated this point:
All of these stories and characters can start to collide. The cinematic multiverse is going to be born out of this movie.”
The Flash releases June 3rd, 2022, and will be Ezra Miller’s first solo adventure as the hero. He previously made cameos in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2016’s Suicide Squad. He appeared as a major character in Justice League, though director Zack Snyder is currently reworking that film to complete his original vision.
