Following reports of a new trailer yesterday, Naughty Dog and Sony have unveiled a new story trailer for The Last of Us Part II. You can check out the blood-soaked footage below.
While there are a couple of scenes we’ve seen before, such as Ellie begging someone off-screen to “please stop,” mostly everything here is new. This trailer also gives us more Joel than any previous footage. The game will take place five years after The Last of Us. However, there are a couple of scenes with the younger Ellie.  These scenes imply that there will either be flashbacks or that the game will start soon after the first game before jumping forward.
That would be a similar set-up to the first game. Players controlled Joel’s daughter, Sarah, in the opening chapter before jumping ahead 20 years. A shot in the trailer shows Joel riding horseback with who looks to be his brother Tommy and Ellie, nowhere in sight. Perhaps we’ll play as Joel in the opening chapter before jumping ahead the five years. Although, Naughty Dog has stated that Ellie is the only playable character. Another earlier scene shows Joel playing the guitar for Ellie, which is most likely how she learned herself.
Similar to other trailers, we also don’t get much of a look at the infected. Naughty Dog has stated this will be a very personal story for Ellie. She’s on a mission of revenge, so it makes sense that all promotional material has focused on human enemies. Ellie’s love interest, Dina, is absent except for a single frame. Dina’s lack of screen time lends credence to the theory that her death is why Ellie is seeking revenge. However, unless players have been spoiled, they’ll have to wait until the game releases to see what happens.
The Last of Us Part II releases June 19th, 2020.
