The over-the-top hack n’ slash game by developers Grasshopper Manufacture and Kadokawa Games, Lollipop Chainsaw, is officially being remade for consoles sometime in 2023. The game was first released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2012, and producer Yoshimi Yasuda recently confirmed that he and other members of the team have purchased the IP from Kadokawa Games to produce the remake, with Warner Bros picking up the distribution rights. Mr. Yasuda says the Lollipop Chainsaw remake “will be taking a more realistic approach to the graphics this time” but did not specify what consoles it would be released for.
Lollipop Chainsaw Remake and Release
First teased last month to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the original Lollipop Chainsaw, the official remake has been confirmed by producer Yoshimi Yasuda.
Yasuda leads the developer, Dragami Games, and the game will be “a combination of development staff from the original version, including Yasuda as producer, and new development staff from Dragami Games.”
The aim is to recreate the original, but Yasuda explained that the Lollipop Chainsaw remake will feature some notable differences, including the previously mentioned more realistic approach and new music.
“Unfortunately, various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw, and it has been some time since players have not been able to access the game on current consoles,” he said in a statement.
The cult action classic was first released in 2012 as a collaboration with game director Suda51, movie director James Gunn and Yasuda himself and focused on the story of a girl named Juliet Starling – a high school cheerleader finds herself caught in the midst of a zombie outbreak.
“We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot,” Yasuda said. “As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavor.”
The game will release sometime in 2023.
