Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will reprise their The Walking Dead roles for a new Rick and Michonne spinoff. The series is set to release in 2023. AMC Networks announced the new series during the first panel for The Walking Dead at 2022’s San Diego Comic-Con. The SDCC22 panel also featured Lincoln and Gurira as surprise guests.

Together, they explained how they have been actively involved in creating and continuing their character’s stories. This, in turn, makes them now credited as executive producers on the project. They will be credited as such when the series gets released.
Scott Gimple, Chief Content Officer of The Walking Dead, will serve as the series showrunner. All in all, the Rick and Michonne spinoff will start with six episodes. Dan McDermott, president of entertainment and AMC Studios and AMC Networks, then went on to say,
This is a moment fans of The Walking Dead have been waiting for since Rick disappeared in a helicopter and Michonne journeyed away in the following season. What a great surprise for the fans at this final Comic-Con for the series that launched the universe and made television history. We couldn’t be any more excited for a truly epic series finale later this year, and to see Andy and Danai return in a new series they helped create.
Rick and Michonne: Kept Apart But Not for Long
The now full-length series was a planned trilogy of films that would have explored Rick Grimes’s future following season 9. The redeveloped project is now presented as “an epic love story between two characters changed by a changed rule.” The series is then described as:
Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. by the ghost of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… and ultimately a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve known before?
The untitled The Walking Dead Rick and Michonne series will air on AMC and AMC plus in 2023.
