While The Walking Dead franchise is known for its brand of post-apocalyptic horror, the real world itself has been experiencing a near-apocalypse of sorts for months now.
And while lockdowns have been implemented almost worldwide to reduce exposure to COVID-19, it’s also meant that many anticipated movies have been pushed to the sidelines until later this year or beyond. The Rick Grimes movie, it would seem, is one of those said movies.
At a panel at this past weekend’s virtual Skybound Xpo panel, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman updated the audience on Rick Grimes’ return.
“There’s tons of stuff going on behind the scenes,” he said. “I don’t want anyone to think that we’re just kind of waiting around for this pandemic to end.”
“I would say that, if anything, the pandemic is going to make a lot of movies better,” he added. “I think the Rick Grimes movie chief among them, just because we’re getting a lot more time to cook this thing and make sure it’s perfect.”
“But when things do quiet down, you guys are going to hear a ton more about this movie,” he added.
So, while the Rick Grimes movie won’t be here anytime soon, it’s at least a relief for fans to know it isn’t cancelled and it’s still being worked on.
Coronavirus has also ensured the pushback of other Walking Dead projects. The tenth season never premiered, due to the post-production work uncompleted before restrictions took place. This means that the tenth season finale will air as a special later in the year, with the new air date due for reveal on July 24th at virtual San Diego Comic Con.
As for when Season 11 will air, it’s anybody’s guess. Initially postponed for three to four weeks in March this year, no news of its release date has surfaced. As if that weren’t enough, the spin-offs Fear the Walking Dead and Worlds Beyond have been paused for the time being.
