It’s been a long wait, but ‘The Who’s Keith Moon movie is finally on its way. The late drummer was known for his unique style, which brought him much acclaim. He was also known for being eccentric and pranking people. But most of all, his self-destructive behavior is what ultimately led to his untimely death. Unfortunately, Keith Moon’s death happened on September 7th, 1978, when he was 32 years old. His passing was due to an accidental overdose of the prescription Heminevrin, prescribed to combat his alcoholism. According to Variety, the film is finally underway and plans to shoot this summer in Britain starting in June.
‘The Who’ Keith Moon movie is tentatively titled “The Real Me” and comes from the title of a song on The Who’s sixth studio album Quadrophenia. Surprisingly, the Moon movie is finally heading forward as The Who’s lead singer Roger Daltrey has been trying to make a movie about Moon for years. It’s reported that Daltrey has been in talks about the film for over a decade!
The movie comes to us from White Horse Pictures based in L.A., which also produced documentaries such as Ron Howard’s Beatles documentary and Scorsese’s doc on George Harrison. “The Real Me” is directed by Paul Whittington and executively produced by former Who band members frontman Daltrey and singer/guitarist Pete Townshend. The script comes from Oscar-nominated British screenwriter Jeff Pope who has received recognition for Philomena.
Keith Moon has received praise for many of his drum solos and performances on the bridges throughout ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ and ‘Behind Blue Eyes.‘ Keith Moon played every album since The Who’s debut and remained the band’s core. The last album Moon played on was 1978’s ‘Who Are You,’ which came out two weeks before he passed away. Keith Moon’s death rocked The Who and left Townshend and Daltrey saddened, but the two remaining members can now finally get to pay tribute to him with a movie of his own.
