It is always good to see a classic show or movie regain popularity. But it isn’t often that many classics get the remake treatment. Thundercats, the cartoon series, is getting a third iteration. This time it’s in the form of a live-action adaption.
Thundercats Project Headed By Godzilla Vs. Kong Director
Godzilla Vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is set to helm the Thundercats movie. Speaking to Deadline, the director said, “My real obsession with the show came in high school, the pinnacle of me deciding that I want to be a filmmaker.” Some might say it’s destiny that Wingard leads the live-action adaption.
Simon Barrett, the writer of You’re Next, says that Adam Wingard’s movie will ‘destroy.’ If his work with the monster movie is any indication, he may have a series on his hands. With the Thundercats live-action adaption in the hands of a devoted fan, things are looking well. Barrett will also be co-writing the script for the movie. Wingard and Simon have worked together previously. It would stand to reason their previous experience together would help the project.
The Thundercats cartoon originally aired in 1985 and ran to 1989. And it ran for about four seasons. Each season began with a five-part story that set the stage for the season. This incarnation had the cat humanoids become stranded on an alien planet. In 2011, another animated incarnation of the series was created. In this series, the group had been living on Third Earth peacefully. Lion-o had the Lizard People to contend with in this adaption.
The plot for the Thundercats currently unknown. But while we wait for the plot and release date, binge-watch the animated series on Hulu. One can hope that such a venture would bring in new fans. Only time will tell.
