Get your snapping fingers ready, because the scariest family around is making a comeback. Recently announced by Netflix, Tim Burton is making his TV directorial debut with a live-action spin-off of The Addams Family called Wednesday.
This series is currently slated to run for eight episodes. A blog post from Netflix described the spin-off as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday’s years as a student at the peculiar Nevermore Academy. Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body. ”
Netflix has yet to release any details on cast, but Smallville’s Alfred Gough and Miles Millar are both acting as showrunners. Tim Burton is known for his vast list of Gothic works such as Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish, Batman, Batman Returns and many more.
Teddy Biaselli, director of Netflix’s children and YA series, closed the announcement stating, “As Wednesday stans, my team and I feel an inherent responsibility to get this truly one-of-a-kind character right for both old fans and new. We’re confident this talented group will do her justice as she prepares for the dreaded underworld known as adulthood.”
As of this writing, there is no official release window, but fans are sure to learn more about Tim Burton’s vision in the coming months.
