Tom Cruise’s space movie is going into lightspeed – Universal is putting $200 million behind it.
Reported in Deadline, Cruise managed to seal the deal via a Zoom call. He pitched the idea for his movie alongside director Doug Liman, producer and story advisor Christopher McQuarrie and PJ van Sandwijk. And what’s more, they did so without a script, which Liman is currently writing.
This news follows on from May, where Deadline revealed that Cruise was working alongside NASA and SpaceX’s Elon Musk to create a space-based movie. It won’t be your standard CGI fare either – the 58-year-old actor and stuntman is going to shoot the flick in space. In fact, this will make it the first story-driven feature to do so.
As of the time of writing, no other details can be gleaned from the movie itself. All that is known is that it won’t be a Mission: Impossible film. In addition, Director Doug Liman watched the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launch at the Kennedy Space Center on July 20, so it’s possible he may have visited to retrieve inspiration for his script.
Tom Cruise is currently shooting Mission: Impossible 7, which is set to be followed by an eighth installment. These movies have consistently showed off Cruise’s athletic prowess and ability as a stuntman. The series’ iconic Cruise stunts include free-climbing Dead Horse Point in Utah, hanging off a flying airplane and climbing the Burj Khalifa. The actor continues to make the headlines as his stunts grow bigger and bolder with every movie.
Cruise had collaborated with Director Doug Liman on two projects prior to this one – 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow and 2017’s American Made. Liman began his directorial career helming 1994’s Getting In and has also produced a number of hit TV shows including The OC and Suits.
