The future of the Spider-Man franchise in the Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t look good. By all signs so far, it looks like Spidey is heading out of the MCU. Both Spider-Man star Tom Holland and MCU boss Kevin Feige have seemingly confirmed this while talking with Entertainment Weekly during D23. Feige stated that he always knew this deal wouldn’t last forever and he was grateful for the opportunity:
“We got to make five films within the MCU with Spider-Man: two standalone films and three with the Avengers. It was a dream that I never thought would happen. It was never meant to last forever. We knew there was a finite amount of time that we’d be able to do this, and we told the story we wanted to tell, and I’ll always be thankful for that.”
“Basically, we’ve made five great movies,”
“It’s been five amazing years. I’ve had the time of my life. Who knows what the future holds? But all I know is that I’m going to continue playing Spider-Man and having the time of my life. It’s going to be so fun, however we choose to do it. The future for Spider-Man will be different, but it will be equally as awesome and amazing, and we’ll find new ways to make it even cooler.”
Now, there’s always the chance that a deal is struck sometime in the next few weeks, months, or even years. We have no idea when the third Spider-Man film will hit production and just a few years ago, we thought the notion of the web-head joining up with the likes of Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy was nothing but a pipe dream. What is important to note is that Tom Holland will, in fact, play Spider-Man for Sony going forward, regardless of his role in the MCU. At least some fans can take solace in knowing that we won’t have to sit through another reboot from Sony.
While Kevin Feige is definitely glad to have the chance to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, you have to believe that this wasn’t how he wanted to end the character’s tenure in the cinematic universe. With Far From Home, Spidey was positioned as the heir apparent to Tony Stark as the new head of the MCU and the film’s epic ending left you wanting to see where the character will go next.
We’ll be sure to update you if there are any new developments with Spider-Man 3 or talks between Sony and Marvel.
