The curse of bad videogame movies seems to have been broken with Sonic The Hedgehog this past weekend. The Uncharted movie is now next in line to take a swing at possibly doing some universe building like Marvel.
The PlayStation franchise that has sold over 41 million copies is getting its own movie starring Spider-Man’s Tom Holland. Drake’s actor Holland gave an update on the movie in a recent interview stating what viewers should expect.
“I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games,” Holland said. “So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time. But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”
It is unconfirmed yet if Holland’s comments mean the Uncharted movie is canon to the games. But if the film gets a positive reaction and the $60 million projected opening like the Sonic movie, it wouldn’t be farfetched for Sony to make it so.
Drake is About His History
Uncharted for the unfamiliar is a series about explorer (and somewhat thief) Nathan Drake going around finding lost treasures and civilizations. There’s guns, love interests, double-crosses, and all of those things you expect from an adventure flick.
The film has been in development for awhile going through many directors: David O Russel( American Hustle) Travis Knight(Bumblebee), among many others. Now, Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Venom) is rumored to head the project.
The Uncharted project is like there is a girl that is always single, and guys keep lining up only to walk away. However, there is one constant who has been there since the beginning, and that rock is Mark Wahlberg.
Wahlberg was originally meant to be Nathan Drake in earlier iterations of the film. Things have obviously changed as he now plays his old mentor Sully. This project has been in development so long that the “young” guy meant to represent Drake is old enough to play Sully. The Uncharted movie is scheduled to hit theatres on March 5th, 2021.
