On Thursday, it was announced that Toys for Bob would now be supporting the development of Call of Duty: Warzone. This was an interesting announcement as the Activision-owned studio had just been hit with a round of layoffs. The Toys for Bob Twitter account made the announcement in a tweet sent Thursday: “Toys for Bob is proud to support development for Season 3 of Call of Duty #Warzone, and look forward to more to come. #LETSGO dev squads! #Verdansk84“
Fellow Activision studio Raven Software congratulated them by saying, “Glad to have you on the project with us!” The most recent game from Toys for Bob was Crash Bandicoot 4. They are also the most recent studio to join the development of Call of Duty: Warzone. Journalist Andy Robinson tweeted that “I was recently told that virtually every studio at Activision is now working on Call of Duty.” He elaborated by saying:
I love Warzone, so it’s great to hear Activision is committing to creating significant content, but it seems like that should come from the teams killing themselves to put out annual (and increasingly lacklustre) box games. Cold War sold incredibly well, so they’ll continue.”
A new Call of Duty is released every fall and Warzone season three just started. It seems as if Activision Blizzard wants all of its studios to work on the most successful projects. This happened in January with Vicarious Visions. The studio developed the critically acclaimed Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 + 2 and was moved to the Blizzard side of the company to assist with their games. Pro Skater 1 + 2 was the fastest-selling game in the history of the series so this was a confusing decision to many.
As Andy Robinson mentioned earlier, Activision has begun pushing all of its studios to help with Call of Duty development. This could potentially be harmful because it may make Call of Duty the only game being developed by the Activision side of Activision Blizzard.
