I’ll be honest; when I first heard the concept behind Turmoil: The Heat Is On, I wasn’t entirely sure what to think about a simulator centered around oil drilling. But after a few minutes in the game, I was totally hooked. Since its release in the summer of 2016, Turmoil has been a huge hit with gamers, Twitch streamers, and YouTubers alike. With its new DLC, The Heat Is On, the developers at Gamious have made additions to the core gameplay that present new challenges and rewards, and it is just as addicting as the original.
Turmoil is a “tongue-in-cheek” take on the more traditional simulator genre. In this extremely stylized simulator set in the 19th century, you dig for oil in hopes of making big bucks in the oil industry. The growth of the local town depends on your success as you master your trade, and the tradesmen you unlock help your progress. With that being said, the new DLC takes the best parts of the core game and adds more challenges and rewards. It introduces magma, new locations in town, card games, and more.
One of the things that makes this DLC so great is how familiar it feels. For those who have played Turmoil before, you will feel right at home with The Heat Is On. However, if you’re new to the series, I would highly suggest starting off with the original game to get a feel for its more general features. That being said, the DLC still provides an addicting, fast-paced experience that will keep you coming back to the oil fields!
Magma is the biggest difference when it comes to drilling your land. While it can be used to your advantage, you’ll have to visit Jack, one of the new shopkeepers, first to upgrade your equipment enough to handle it effectively. Some familiar faces, like Edward, Fred, William, and Anthony, all make an appearance, but there are some new shop owners. Philip runs a new, shady card game in the saloon, and even the mayor is new — and his tips are free. The land is split up into three new sections which gives players plenty to keep them busy in this new DLC.
All in all, The Heat Is On is a DLC well worth its price point. Its fast-paced, strategic gameplay is perfect for a quick gaming session or hours on end.
