According to a report from Deadline, the long-rumored Twins sequel, Triplets, is in the works. Joining the original stars, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, is Tracy Morgan. Morgan will play the third, long-lost sibling. Also joining them for the Triplets movie is the original Twins director and producer Ivan Reitman.
Triplets is set to begin shooting in January in Boston, Massachusetts. The script for the Twins sequel was written by Dylan Dawson and Lucas Kavner. Though Dawson is primarily an actor, he previously wrote for the highly reviewed TV short series, Wild Life, which airs on SYFY. Kavner, on the other hand, is the author of the plays Fish Eye and Carnival Kids, which also received praise from critics.
In speaking with Deadline, Ivan Reitman shared how the idea for the Triplets movie came about, stating, “Twins was quite successful, and some years after, this whole thing started with Arnold meeting Eddie Murphy, and the suggestion came from one of them.”
Unfortunately, it was not meant to be. Reitman went on to explain what happened with Eddie Murphy and why Tracy Morgan was cast in the Twins sequel instead, saying:
We started a script with Eddie, and after the success he had with Amazon Prime on Coming 2 America, he got himself booked up heavily. And we knew we were going to make it at the beginning of next year. I’d been good friends with Tracy Morgan for a long time and always thought he was one of the funniest men in the world. I thought he would make a terrific triplet, and we rewrote the whole script for him. Now, we’ll go out and try and put the money together and get it made.”
The original movie was a hit for Universal Pictures. It grossed around $216 million globally. However, a sequel was not made in time for Universal to retain the rights for future installments, so there is currently no major studio attached to the Triplets movie. However, the Montecito Picture Company is among the producers for the Twins sequel.
