Today has been an onslaught of disappointing news coming out of Ubisoft, not only with the delay of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora but now with the announcement of four upcoming Ubisoft projects being canceled. In addition, in an attempt to cut costs and focus more on Ubisoft’s bigger franchises, games like Ghost Recon Frontline and Splinter Cell VR have found themselves on the chopping block.
Ghost Recon Frontline is a free-to-play battle royale spin-off from the titular acting shooting game that would have seen 102-player battles. Unfortunately, the initial reception around the Ubisoft game wasn’t too optimistic, especially in a market saturated with battle royale games. Ubisoft had a closed test planned for the title but was indefinitely postponed, and now it seems Ghost Recon Frontline may never see the light of day.
A year of delayed and canceled games from Ubisoft
The cancellation of the Splinter Cell VR game isn’t surprising, with the game’s announcement back in 2020 alongside an Assassin’s Creed VR game but vanished soon after. However, the Assasin’s Creed VR game might still be in production, with some leaked footage finding its way onto the internet last April. As of this point, there has been little more information regarding the Assasin’s Creed title, but unfortunately, we may not get the chance to see a Splinter Cell VR game. Out of the four games, Ghost Recon Frontline and Splinter Cell VR are the only two named titles that were canceled. Two other games had been canceled, but they had been announced, and unnamed games are a part of a broader strategy to reinvest into their more popular titles.
If you’re a Splinter Cell fan, all left for you to look forward to is the announced remake of the splinter cell currently in development at Ubisoft Toronto. Unfortunately, these are just among an already growing list of delayed and canceled Ubisoft projects, including the Prince of Persia remake and Skull & Bones, which will still hopefully arrive this fall.
