Starting a Lox ranch, brewing Fire Resistance Wine, or cooking Yggdrasil Porridge are activities in Valheim that use a grain called Barley. In order to grow this food-type resource, you will need to travel to the Plains, the biome inhabited by the woolly Lox, deadly Deathsquitos, and the barbaric Fuling tribe. Unlike the Black Forest or Swamp, the Plains only have sparse trees, but its landscape is covered with a sea of golden foliage. However, Barley does not grow in the wild but is manually cultivated by the Fulings, making their villages the primary source of Barley in Valheim.Â
Finding & Farming Barley in Valheim
Therefore, to get Barley in Valheim, you will need to locate a Fuling Village, which is usually recognizable by its guard towers, elaborate huts, or massive burning bonfire. These settlements do not always generate with Barley, but if they do, you will find small patches of farmland where they grow this grain resource.

Slaying the Fulings in Valheim is optional to collect their villages’ Barley, as they cannot do anything to stop you from grabbing several stalks and fleeing to your base. However, do not expect a warm welcome from the hostile residents who penalize any trespassers with death. Nevertheless, once you clear a village or steal the Barley growing in the settlement, you will be able to begin farming the resource in Valheim. Planting and growing Barley is the same as any other crop; you will need a Cultivator, a tool made with Core Wood and Bronze. Equip the Cultivator and begin planting the grain with the resource in your inventory. Seeds are not required for farming Barley.
According to Valheim YouTuber Jiroc the Viking, setting up your Barley farm in a circular shape will produce the highest quantity in regards to space used. The same goes for Flax, another resource found in the Plains. Moreover, remember that Barley only grows in the biome where it was found. Attempting to grow it anywhere else is not feasible. Once your grain has matured, Jiroc recommends using the Bronze Atgeir’s special spinning AoE attack to quickly harvest a wide circle of Barley. Based on information from the Valheim Wiki, here is a list of recipes used with this ingredient:
- Barley Flour –Â made with a Windmill
- Barley Wine Base: Fire Resistance – brewed using Cloudberries and Barley
- Yggdrasil Porridge – cooked with Sap, Barley, and Royal Jelly
Valheim is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
