(SPOILERS AHEAD for ‘Marvel’s What If…?’ Season 1)
‘Marvel’s What If…?’ just wrapped up its first season with The Watcher assembling a team to defeat a version of Ultron who obtained all of the infinity stones and had plans to destroy the entire multiverse. This team, later dubbed “The Guardians Of The Multiverse,” consisted of several key characters from the season including Strange Supreme, Captain Carter, Star-Lord T’Challa, Party Thor, and Killmonger.
However, the squad also featured a character we had not seen before in the Disney+ series. A version of Gamora who had killed Thanos and, seemingly with the help of Tony Stark (in a Sakaar-version of the Hulkbuster armor), created a device to destroy their universe’s infinity stones.
For a finale that gave viewers some resolution to previous episodes, adding Gamora to the team felt a bit random. Turns out, Gamora and Tony Stark were supposed to be at the center of another episode in Season 1 but, it was ultimately cut.
Series Head Writer A.C. Bradley spoke with ComicBook about this missing episode, saying:
What happened with the Gamora episode, there was originally supposed to be — early on in the season — a Tony and Gamora-centric episode. However, due to COVID and production delays, one of our amazing, amazing animation houses around the globe got hit pretty hard by the pandemic.”
Bradley continued:
And we were left with two choices: push the entire season to later this year, or push this one episode to Season 2. We made the choice to push that episode to Season 2, and hoped that seeing Gamora in the finale serves as a teaser for what is to come.”
To round out the interview, Bradley teased that the Gamora and Tony Stark episode in Season 2 will essentially act as a prequel. The writer also praised the animation studios for bringing this series to fruition.
