According to a top Apple analyst, it’s likely that Apple is launching a foldable iPhone come 2023. This phone, predicted to be the size of an iPad or bigger, is absolutely giving off Y2K flip phone vibes. And as they say, history repeats itself.
Reportedly, the “iPhone Flip” as they are calling it in its early stages, will have an 8-inch display screen according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities.
This news comes just a week after the latest Apple Spring 2021 Event, unveiling a plethora of devices including the highly anticipated new Apple iPhone in purple and the definitely serious iPhone 13 announcement. Apple has remained the highest competitor to Android model smartphones, and despite other rumors, Apple continues to prevail through its ability to update the iOS platform and remodel the iPhone on an annual basis.
Foldable Smartphone Competition
Competitors such as the Samsung Galaxy are also projected to continue the flip phone wave, with models following the Galaxy Z Fold 2 model. Currently, however, the iPhone Flip reports the greatest size in the display. Its likely competition will continue to grow as Apple capitalizes on the modern foldable phone trend further.
Increasing the display size, while introducing a durable flip feature, allows consumers to continue placing iPhones in pockets and bags, as they look towards using their smartphone more prominently for streaming content, gaming, or even for professional purposes.
Future of Apple Smartphone Evolution
The flexibility of the iPhone Flip moves us even further into the digital landscape. This past year we’ve seen companies offer more remote and flexible work options. Apple is seizing the opportunity for remote work, WFH, or business travel by making content more accessible on a maximized display size.
So what does this mean for the future of the smartphone? Perhaps optimizing the smartphone experience will mean increased time on phones versus laptops or tablets. Unlike the ’90s or the early 2000s, bigger phones no longer symbolize outdated technology.
With most iPhone releases, we see a price increase. It is still unclear if Apple plans to release a standard model of the iPhone concurrently with the foldable model. While the current iPhone 12 Pro is priced at nearly $1,000, the pricing is still unknown for future models.
Stay tuned as we continue to stay updated and monitor news on the “iPhone Flip.”
