S.W.A.T Season 7 producers have listened to the fandom; therefore, they will renew the series. This news comes after the shocking announcement that the crime series had been canceled. For years, the CBS show has earned high ratings on the network. Thousands of viewers tune in every Friday night to catch up on new episodes. The plot gets its story from the “Robert Hamner” series produced in the 1970s by Robert Hamner. But the original story did not fly, after one year, forcing its drop from TV. However, things picked up, and the show went on to air for six years. On Friday, CBS shocked fans by announcing that S.W.A.T season 7 had been canceled. But current reports have it that the show is renewed for the final season, leaving the actors and viewers excited. Find out what happened and why the season was eventually renewed.
S.W.A.T Season 7 Was Canceled Before It Was Renewed
On November 2, 2017, TV lovers were introduced to the crime series. The story grew on fans as they became acquainted with the Los Angeles Police Department S.W.A.T team. While fans were reveling in the plot twist of the sixth season, they were hit with news of a cancellation. CBS confirmed that the S.W.A.T season 7 had been canceled, but they had justifiable reasons.
Sources noted that a primary cause for striking out the season 7 was finances. There was a disagreement between the core producers— the CBS network and Sony Pictures Television. The streaming giant was trying to sort out their license charge, and it affected the show’s budget. On the other hand, Sony Pictures was hell-bent on retaining the license charge without considering CBS’s expenditures.
Apart from the budget slash, which could have tampered with production, the Writers Guild of America also played a role. A week ago, the WGA embarked on a nationwide strike that halted the production of shows and films. To a large extent, it interfered with the hopes of continuity.
Fans showed their disappointment online. The cancellation even sparked a debate. Many wondered if other networks would proceed with reviving the series. But this left doubts in their hearts, especially since the previous season was set to end on a cliffhanger.
Hours after fans prepared to bade their favorite show and characters goodbye, there was a change in decision to cancel. CBS Network and Sony Pictures Television scheduled a meeting. But what was decided in that meeting?
Shemar Moore Will Produce the Renewed S.W.A.T season 7
As reported by Variety, CBS decided to renew S.W.A.T. season 7. This time, one of the series’ lead characters will be at the helm of affairs. Shemar Moore, who has played, Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, will be an executive producer for this season.
Executive officials from CBS and Sony Pictures Television shared a joint statement to retract their initial position. Amy Reisanbach and Katherine Pope explained that they prioritized their viewers’ concerns and feedback. This led to a continuation of the storyline.
At the same time, S.W.A.T season 7 will be the last season of the crime series. It would include thirteen episodes and would debut between 2023 and 2024. The showrunners have taken advice from fans to give some characters and storylines the closure they merit.
While advancing the wishes of the fandom, the statement honored the cast and crew members. These are the people whose talents and contributions have made the show a hit.
Throughout different seasons, all hands have been on deck to ensure a smooth transition. Moore has lived up to expectations as the S.W.A.T sergeant expected to lead a specialized tactical unit in Los Angeles. But he is not the only one bringing his character to life.
Other cast members who have made the series a great watch include Rochelle Aytes starring as Hondo’s girlfriend, aka Nichelle. Joining her are David Lim (Victor Tan), Jay Harrington (David “Deacon” Kay), and Alex Russell (Jim Street). The crew’s makeup working as executive producers are Pavun Shetty, Justin Lin, Andy Dettman, Paul Bernard, and Moore.
Shemar Moore Reacted to the News of S.W.A.T Getting Canceled
It has been established that the handsome Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson is not going anywhere— until 2024. And he loves his character just as much as viewers. Well, this was what he portrayed through his reaction following the news of a cancellation.
In an Instagram video, Moore, who had hoped for more explanations of things, acted confused. He mentioned that the show’s ratings were high, adding, “We’ve done nothing wrong.”
He mentioned that everyone hoped the story would continue, and they had been assured on set. So hearing about a cancellation was strange. Despite calling out the network, he praised them for creating diversity with the storyline. Moore recognized his significant role as the lead character, especially as a man of color.
He appealed to fans to blast the horns on the network and ensure they understood their decision was a mistake. Somehow, his prayers were answered. And as fans tune in for the S.W.A.T season 6 finale, they are reminded that a season 7 renewal is in the works!
