Looney Tunes star Wile E. Coyote is officially coming to the silver screen.
A recent Deadline article has revealed that Jon and Josh Silberman (of Living Biblically fame) are penning the project, titled Coyote vs. Acme.
Notably, this will be the pair’s first feature film. The brothers have worked on shows such as It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Bordertown, and Good Vibes.
Producing the animated feature is Chris McKay. The American director and animator has found recent success directing The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie.
Wile E. Coyote has been starring in cartoons since 1949. He is perhaps most famous for finding ways to trap the elusive ‘Road Runner’. He’s also known for being an occasional antagonist for Bugs Bunny.
Given the slapstick comedy of the cartoons, Wile E. Coyote offers a lot of potential for a feature film.
Wile E. Coyote A Success Like Space Jam?
This news follows a Warner Bros. announcement in June that Looney Tunes will be rebooted. Branded Looney Tunes Cartoons, the one-to-six-minute shorts are due to air in 2019. They will be distributed across multiple platforms, including digital streaming, mobiles, and television.
The series promises to employ the voice talents of Looney Tunes veterans Eric Bauza, Jeff Bergman and Bob Bergen. Whether the Wile E. Coyote film follows in the same vein is unclear. Nowadays, big-budget Hollywood animated features employ well-known Hollywood actors to increase promotional value.
The last two big-budget Looney Tunes features were 1996’s Space Jam and Back in Action. These films raked in $230.4 million and $68.5 million worldwide respectively. The latter was a box office bomb, having been developed with an $80 million budget. The former however is the highest-grossing basketball film of all time. A sequel is currently under development, starring LeBron James as the protagonist instead of Michael Jordan.
