We saw the daughters of Thanos in the Guardians of the Galaxy 3, but will Gamora return to MCU after appearing in the 2014 timeline? This is a question that many Marvel fans have after watching the latest show of the Guardians. Let’s dive into all details and possibilities of whether Star-Lord’s green beloved will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in future movies and TV shows.
We saw Gamora back in 2019 with Avengers: Endgame. That movie set the stage for the time-travel concepts to integrate into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With this new addition, and the laws of quantum physics, the Avengers went back in time to save the vanished. However, when you mess with time, it can mess with you.
A younger version of Thanos returned from a 2014 timeline, but with him came Gamora and Nebula, alternate versions of his daughters. 2014 Nebula was killed in action, but Gamora switched sides to stand beside the Avengers and then walked away. However, Star-Lord, still grieving for the loss of his universe’s Gamora, became obsessed with loving this younger Gamora.
In Thor: Love and Thunder, we see Star-Lord still hoping to get his love back. However, he doesn’t meet her until the events of the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3. We saw a very different version of Gamora in this movie, making it harder to know whether we would see her again in the MCU.
Spoiler Alert: The following content spoils the story of the Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3.
Will Gamora Return to The MCU in Future Projects?
We saw in the GoTG 3 trailers that Gamora is, in fact, set to return to the MCU after the Avengers: Endgame. But she’s not working with the Guardians. She did disappear during the events of the Endgame, but here we find out that she has become a Ravager, a group of space pirates. This is where Peter Quill started his adventure in Space with Yandu, and it seems like she’s following the same path. However, her fate in this universe bonds her again with Star-Lord in a mission to save the Rocket Raccoon.
Nebula’s deal with the Ravagers brings Star-Lord and Gamora together once more. But even as Peter Quill tries to win her heart, things don’t go the way we expected. In fact, this Gamora doesn’t want to fall in love with Star-Lord. Things stay that way until the end, even after they have a moment, like in the first Guardians movie. But does this mean we won’t see Gamora return to the MCU again? The Gamora’s actress seems to have a solid answer to that one.
Zoe Saldana Doesn’t Want To Play The Role Anymore
Zoe Saldana’s recent interview about Guardians of The Galaxy 3 with Total Film clarifies things about the future of this character. She declares that playing this version of Gamora was “Fun and Painful” as she wasn’t a member of the Guardians anymore. However, she claims that after playing this role for ten years, it’s time to put an end to her acting career as Gamora.
Gamora’s actress says, “I think the time has come for me to step down and for the next generation to come forward.” This makes her return to the MCU a solid ending to this character’s story. James Gunn, the director of GoTG 3, had told fans many times that this narrative would end this version of the Guardians. And it seems after the retirement of Star-Lord, Mantis, Nebula, and Drax, it’s fair to say that Gamora will have her own different path in the MCU moving forward.
Gamora Came Back to The MCU Just To Stay In The Shadows
By the end of the Guardians of The Galaxy 3 movie, we saw that Gamora and Star-Lord had their final chat. Even after going through all the chaos together, Gamora didn’t accept his love, and Peter moved on. After that, we see Gamora returning to the Ravagers, just like they’re her new family. And this is the end for her.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is far from being over right now. With Phase 5 just beginning, we’ll have a lot to see coming in this franchise. However, there will be much bigger crossovers by Phase 6. With the Avengers: Kang’s Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, we’re probably going to see some familiar faces once more. Rocket and his new Guardians are presumably among those, and the legendary Star-Lord will return. But for Gamora? The chances are really low.
Guardians of The Galaxy Volume 3 sets Gamora’s return to the MCU to finish her story with a solid ending and explain what happened in Avengers: Endgame. That being said, we probably won’t see Gamora played by Zoe Saldana again. However, if she ever shows up as Gamora again, it would be a minor appearance to support the plot for the bigger movies like Avengers 5 and 6.
