Boom Studios may be ready to introduce Willow the Vampire Slayer in its upcoming Slayer re-launch. A new story in this week’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer 25thAnniversary sets up the upcoming The Vampire Slayer series. The story, Trust The Process, gives readers a peek at what is to come. Specifically, it shows a new Slayer in town. Well, they aren’t new to town or the series. In fact, Sunnydale’s resident Wiccan and Buffy’s BFF Willow appear to be the Chosen One.
Willow the Vampire Slayer? How Did This Happen?
In Trust The Process from Sarah Gailey, Carlos Olivares, and Valentina Pinto, Buffy heads to a psychiatrist. This visit stems from the Slayer’s questioning of her role in life. As all her friends grow and change, she is stuck with a responsibility and a destiny she didn’t ask for. Plus, she worries that her job (as Slayer) is consuming her.
Of course, being a Buffy comic, the psychiatrist turns out to be another vampire needing staked. However, it is not Buffy that dusts the doctor this time. Instead, a very different-looking Willow comes to the rescue. Clad in a leather jacket and a weird pentagram necklace, Willow makes short work of the vampire. What does this all mean?
Is This a Permanent Thing?
Unfortunately, the story ends before any explanation is given. As Willow proclaims, “I Feel Better Than Ever,” the story cuts off. However, the final page does inform readers that this story will continue in The Vampire Slayer #1.
Speaking of, this shake-up may be the reason for the indeterminate title of the new series. We are all used to the title Buffy the Vampire Slayer. However, the Boom Studios re-launch is just being called The Vampire Slayer. Perhaps Willow will be one of many new Slayers to fill the titular role. Although, the solicitations for the first three issues hint at Willow being the focus.
All, or some, will be revealed when The Vampire Slayer #1 hits shelves on April 20.
