Hollywood’s longtime famed actor Robert De Niro is starring in the upcoming Warner Bros. movie Wise Guys, opposite another famous Hollywood actor… himself! In this mob drama coming from filmmaker Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Wag the Dog), Robert De Niro is expected to star as the two main characters.
The film Wise Guys is described as a period piece that follows the story of two Italian American crime bosses, Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, who ran two separate crime families during the mid-20th century. In 1957, Vito Genovese attempted and failed to assassinate Frank Costello. Costello ended up taking his leave from the mafia after getting injured during the almost assassination. It will be interesting to see De Niro take up the task of playing enemy against himself on the screen.
Wise Guys movie Reunites De Niro with Past Co-Workers
The Oscar-nominated co-writer of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas, Nicholas Pileggi, has penned the screenplay for Wise Guys. Although Pileggi co-wrote the Goodfellas screenplay and wrote the 1985 book Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family that Goodfellas is based on, the classic crime epic has no relation to the upcoming Warner Bros. pic.
The Wise Guys movie reunites Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Levinson with Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro in another collaboration. The two have previously worked together on the Emmy-nominated HBO TV movie The Wizard of Lies, where Robert De Niro stars as Bernie Madoff. The pair also worked on the 2008 dramedy What Just Happened along with Wag the Dog (1997) and Sleepers(1996).
Irwin Winkler of the Rocky franchise has also boarded the Wise Guys movie as a producer.
