La La Land’s Ryan Gosling is currently in talks to star in Universal’s reboot of the classic horror film, The Wolfman. According to reports, Gosling approached Universal with a pitch for the newest reboot of the classic horror tale, so nothing has officially been announced as of this writing.
Along with Gosling potentially starring in the Wolfman reboot, Orange Is the New Black screenwriters, Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, are set to write the script for the new film. An official director has yet to be chosen, but Universal has been meeting with potential directors such as Cory Finley. who directed HBO’s Bad Education.Â
Variety reports, “It’s unknown what the new take on Wolfman will look like, though it is believed to be set in present times and in the vein of Jake Gyllenhaal’s thriller Nightcrawler, with an obvious supernatural twist.”
Lovingly referred to as “The Dark Universe,” Universal has taken on rebooting a slew of classic horror films. It began with The Mummy starring Tom Cruise in 2017. However, the film released to scathingly negative reviews, so the studio had to rethink their approach to the films. The most recent reboot, The Invisible Man, was received positively despite its lack of a theatrical release, and its direction will inspire future films.
The Wolfman originally released on the silver screen in 1941. Lon Chaney Jr. took on the role of the iconic movie monster and did it spectacularly. In a remake released in 2010, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Benicio Del Toro took on the role. Needless to say, Ryan Gosling has some major shoes to fill if he does end up accepting the role.
