While the X-Men’s Jubilee has always stayed on the sidelines, she proved her place as a full-fledged superhero this week. If you grew up on the X-Men, especially the 90’s cartoon, you know the young mutant was often seen as a “damsel in distress.” However, in recent years, the young mutant has grown, especially regarding power. In fact, Emma Frost once noted that she is an atomic bomb waiting to happen.
X-Men’s Jubilee Pops Off…Literally.
According to CBR, this week’s X-Terminators #5, from Leah Williams and Carlos Gomez, shows X-Men’s Jubilee embracing that power. She is sent in to stop the Collector, an immortal being that seems unstoppable. While the being is at first amused at this young girl in front of him, he quickly changes that attitude.
As Jubilee prepares to show off the full extent of her powers, she notes that she has “always wanted to try this.” However, she never had “an arena large enough” to do so. Then, she triggers a nuclear explosion. Yes, the young mutant becomes a full-scale atomic bomb. The detonation destroys the Collector’s ship as Jubilee is teleported away by Magik.
A History of Fireworks
Jubilee’s powers have always been likened to fireworks throughout her comic and television life. Clearly, everyone did not understand the full extent of those pretty sparks the X-Men character could make. Before X-Terminators, Jubilee has always been afraid of what would happen if she were to unleash the full extent of her power. Clearly, that fear is warranted as she decimates an entire alien spaceship.
Even more, the young mutant survives being in the very heart of that explosion. While her clothes and hair are incinerated in the blast, Jubilee appears uninjured. Perhaps this is a second, dormant power of invincibility or an aversion to being burned.
Let’s hope this is just the beginning of Jubilee exploring the extent of her powers. After all, she has always been overlooked when it comes to awesome heroes. If not, at least X-Terminators #5 gave us, and Jubilee, one really cool moment!
