Yondu Udonta grew to be one of the most interesting and well-constructed characters within the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, especially in the second entry. And that’s saying quite a lot considering how many great characters that franchise has. Now, Marvel Comics is going to give the character a place to shine on paper. A solo comic, simply titled Yondu, is on its way.
The news comes via Comicbook, who spoke with writers Zac Thompson and Lonnie Nadler (Age of X-Man) and illustrator John McCrea (The Boys). The team also showed off the cover of issue #1 and some artwork. They apparently picked Yondu because the comics haven’t explored his story to its full potential. Longtime fans of Guardians of the Galaxy probably know that Yondu was part of the original team line-up. The members seen in the movies are more in line with the current team. But this 5-issue run will cover his characterization as he explores the criminal underbelly of the cosmos. Essentially, it sounds like a street-level book set in space instead of an urban neighborhood. And the team couldn’t be more excited to bring it to us. Thompson had this to say:
“Yondu is the opportunity to do something completely different for Lonnie and myself. We’re giving readers a street-level space book within the cosmic Marvel Universe. Yondu is filled with jokes on every page. We’ve had an absolute blast writing the series and have laughed until we’re in tears every time we come up with a new scene. However, we wanted to bring a depth to Yondu that readers will appreciate. There’s a lot in this book that’s completely new. New planets, new reveals, new characters, and new adventures. Yondu is carving out a brand new pocket of Marvel cosmic and he’s leaving a trail of destruction wherever he goes.”
It’s always nice to see Marvel shine a light on a stellar supporting character. The Amazing Mary Jane is also on its way this October. But even more recent is the announcement of a Morbius solo series. As always, it’s a good time to be a comic fan.
Yondu will begin in November, but there is no firm release date as of yet.
