Yumi’s Cells is the next webtoon series to get a live-action adaptation. The online series currently has over 67 million monthly global readers. This isn’t the first webtoon to receive an adaptation either. A while ago Cheese in the Trap, What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim, and Private Life were the only live-action webtoons.
Yumi’s Cells Breaking Through
The K-drama will star Kim Go Eun as the main character Kim Yu Mi. The series is about Yumi after she experiences a painful breakup. After the breakup, her love cells became dormant and she was unable to experience love. As she falls into her mundane life routine, she soon meets Goo Woong, played by actor Anh Bo Hyun. He also struggles with emotions and expressing himself. As they meet each other, b0th of their love cells start to interact with each other, becoming more active and pushing them towards each other.
The inside look to both Yumi and Goo Woong has been a major hit with Webtoon readers. Many praise Yumi’s Cells for its antics, storytelling, and humor while also delivering a sweet and heartfelt story. Director Lee Sang Yeob commented in an interview
Yumi’s Cells is a drama that depicts the everyday life of an office worker Yumi and her cells in a delightful and lovable way. The story of Yumi’s love life and growth will deliver both warm laughter and reliability as she overcomes the dramatic moments of everyday life in a fun way.”
Webtoons have seen a large rise in international readers in the past few years. With many Webtoon titles such as True Beauty, BJ Alex, and the titles listed above becoming mainstream, many see an interest in adapting the popular titles.
The Yumi’s Cells K-drama will be available on Rakuten Viki on September 17. It is unknown if the series will branch out to other platforms due to Rakuten being the most popular streaming service for Asian Entertainment. Currently, the service includes over 1,300 TV shows from countries like Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. It offers free services to users with built-in ads and limited content.
