After playing a role for nearly a decade, it could be time to put the costume (or, in some cases, makeup) away. For Zoe Saldaña, her time at Marvel might be over, but it seems she is leaving the door open to reprise her role as Gamora. In an interview with Variety, she talked about what it means to her, but also what she won’t miss about her time in the MCU between Guardians of the Galaxy and two Avengers movies.
Much of the feelings about Marvel come from long hours of getting makeup on before embodying Gamora; Zoe Saldaña has mixed feelings about coming back. Although she does not miss waking up early for green makeup to start her day, she does “miss” her Guardian of the Galaxy and “daughter” of Thanos.
“I can never say no to anything, but that green makeup? I wouldn’t be upset if it didn’t happen again. I miss Gamora but I don’t miss 3:30 a.m. call and five-hour makeup sessions and trips to the dermatologist afterwards.”
Zoe Saldaña on Marvel fans and what Gamora means to her and them
Everyone has their reasons to reprise a role, especially when you are that part for four movies, and soon it will be five with Guardians of the Galax Vol. 3. For Zoe Saldaña, what brings her back to Marvel to reprise this role are the fans, particularly the young ones who have been touched by the stories and characters in the MCU.
“Every time that you know that 8-year-old or that dad and mom or those generational fans that remind me that what I did was special to them, it makes me not be cynical about Marvel.”
We are about to get the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special on Disney+ on November 25. We get a mention of the star’s character, but without a glimpse of her or confirmation, we may only have most of the cast. From the original version of the character dying in Infinity War and the introduction of a Variant in Endgame, it is uncertain what the third standalone installment holds for audiences.
Even if we don’t see Zoe Saldaña in the Holiday Special, we will see her in the third movie of the galactic Marvel series of films. It will be the final one with this group. Dave Bautista has already made it clear it would be his last, so we will at least see Drax depart. With an ever-expanding universe, there will be some way to fill that hole now with him gone and James Gunn, who is now co-leading DC.
