Nintendo’s Treehouse presentation followed up Super Mario Odyssey with an interview featuring NoA president Reggie Fils-Aime, and a surprise reveals of a new Metroid game for 3DS. Metroid: Samus Returns takes us back to the classic 2D gameplay, but Samus’s movements are a little reminiscent of Other M. Don’t worry, that’s a good thing – she’s fast and strong, and capable of countering enemies at close range and firing at pretty much any angle.
The game looks fluid and the visuals are fantastic. Both the title and gameplay suggest Metroid Samus Returns might be a kind of reimagining of the original Metroid 2, or perhaps a new game in the series taking a large amount of inspiration from it. The gameplay segment is active right now, so go watch it – it’s incredible. Samus will acquire new abilities never before seen, and old enemies are given new life and have more ways to kill Samus… and be killed by her.
